Roman Republic (1798-99) 2 baiocchi
The first specimen was lot 667 in Jean Elsen sale 132 (Brussels, March 2017), where it sold for €160 (about US$203 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"ITALIE, ETATS PONTIFICAUX, République romaine (1798-1799), Cu 2 baiocchi, s.d. Très Beau à Superbe. (Italy, Pontifical State, Roman Republic (1798-99), copper two baiocchi, undated, very fine to extremely fine.)"
The second specimen was lot 1690 in SINCONA Auction 97 (Zürich, May 2025), where it did not sell. The catalog description[2] noted,
"ITALIEN Rom, Repubblica Romana, 1798-1799. 2 Baiocchi o. J. (1799), Roma. Vorzüglich. Überdurchschnittliche Erhaltung. (Italy, Roman Republic, 1798-99, undated double baiocchi, Rome mint. Extremely Fine, Extraordinary condition.)"
This type was issued in many varieties, KM 7.1 thru 7.5. The first one has an oak wreath reverse, so we attribute it to KM 7.5. The second specimen has an "R" mintmark. The Roman Republic was formed to welcome the advancing French armies in 1798 and the pope fled to Venice and Austrian protection. When Napoleon left Italy for Paris, the puppet republics all collapsed and the pope returned to Rome, to rule until 1808.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: copper or brass, 13.5-27.5 g, 33-37 mm diameter, the second specimen 18.65 g.
Catalog reference: Mont-32 thru Mont-49, Munt. 10; KM 7.5, Berman 3162. The second specimen Mont. 44. Pagani 33b.
