Savoy (1472-82) parpagliola
This specimen was lot 532 in Jean Elsen sale 157 (Brussels, December 2023), where it sold for €160 (about US$206 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"ITALIE, SAVOIE, Duché, Philibert Ier (1472-1482), AR parpagliola (double blanc). D/ Ecu de Savoie dans un trilobe. Sigle: oiseau (?) après DVX. R/ Dans un quadrilobe, croix pattée cantonnée de quatre noeuds. Rare. Petits éclats du flan. Très Beau. (Italy, duchy of Savoy, Philibert I, 1472-82, silver parpagliola or double blanc. Obverse: arms of Savoy in a trilobe, bird privy mark; reverse: within a quadrilobe, a cross pattée cantonned with four clouds. Rare, minor nicks, Very Fine.)"
The parpagliola is obscure, but seems to have been a base silver coin worth 2 soldi and 6 denari occasionally struck in Savoy and Milan. Wikipedia notes, "He [Philibert] died from tuberculosis, in Lyons, at the age of 17 and the duchy was inherited by his younger brother Charles."
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: silver or billon, this specimen 2,29 g.
