Wurttemberg-Oels 1675-SP thaler Dav-7889
This specimen was lot 285 in Künker sale 400 (Berlin, February 2024), where it sold for €10,000 (about US$12,973 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"WÜRTTEMBERG-OELS, HERZOGTUM, Sylvius Friedrich, 1664-1697. Reichstaler 1675, SP, Oels. SYLVI ' FRID : D : G : DUX : WIRT : TE : I : S : OLS : Geharnischtes Brustbild r. mit großer Perücke, Spitzenjabot und Löwenkopfschulter//CO : MON : DO · I · H - EID : STER : & · ME : Vierfach behelmtes, vierfeldiges Wappen mit Mittelschild, oben die geteilte Jahreszahl 16 - 75, unten zu den Seiten die geteilte Signatur S - P (Samuel Pfahler, Münzmeister in Oels 1673-1678). In US-Plastikholder der NGC mit der Bewertung AU 58 (2128124-001). Von großer Seltenheit. Attraktives Exemplar mit feiner Patina, fast vorzüglich/vorzüglich. (Germany, duchy of Württemberg-Oels, Sylvius Frederick, 1664-97, thaler of 1675, Oels mint. Obverse: armored bust right with large wig, lace cravat and a lion's head on the shoulder; reverse: quadruple helmeted and quartered arms with escutcheon, date and mintmaster's initials below. Graded NGC AU 58, extremely rare, attractive example with fine patina, about extremely fine.)"
The dukes of Württemberg-Oels were a cadet branch of the dukes of Württemberg who set themselves up in Silesia (Oels is northeast of Breslau) in 1647 and ruled there until 1792.
