Great Britain (1660-62) penny KM-397
The first specimen was lot 2503 in Goldberg sale 117 (Los Angeles, September 2020), where it sold for $240. The catalog description[1] noted, "Great Britain. Undated Hammered issue Silver Penny. Charles II. Retaining nearly all its original mint luster and practically as struck. Rare thus. PCGS graded MS-62." The second specimen was lot 74714 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, September 2024), where it sold for $312. The catalog description[2] noted, "GREAT BRITAIN. Maundy Penny, ND (1662-70). London Mint. Charles II. NGC MS-63. A pleasingly toned example that exhibits some darker color around the devices, this Choice specimen no doubt stands as one of the finest of the type." Oliver Cromwell's death in 1659 left a leadership vacuum which was quickly filled by inviting prince Charles back from exile to become Charles II. The first series of silver coins of his regime reverted to the old practice of not dating them and come in denominations of penny, tuppence, threepence, groat, sixpence, shilling and halfcrown. When milled coinage was introduced in 1663, copper coinage was produced for the first time since before the Civil War. The penny would remain silver until 1797.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 0.50 g, 0.925 fine silver.
