This five cents was struck at Hanoi by the Vichy regime ruling French Indochina, which was unable to obtain coinage from the Paris mint. It superseded the nickel-brass five cents struck 1938-39. French Indochina was under full Japanese occupation from July 1941 until the surrender in August 1945.

Recorded mintage: 10,000,000.
