This five cents was struck at the Paris mint by de Gaulle's provisional government as part of their reassertion of control over their erstwhile colony. The local Viet Minh, led by Ho Chi Minh, did not see the return of the French as liberation and the First Indochina War soon broke out, resulting in French defeat and humiliation. This type was also struck at Beaumont-le-Roger.
