Stack's Bowers September 2024 Collector's Choice sale, lot 76764

This specimen was lot 76764 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, September 2024), where it sold for $125. The catalog description^[1] noted, "TURKEY. Ottoman Empire. Kurush, AH 1106 (1694/95). Istanbul (Constantinople) Mint. Mustafa II. PCGS AU-53. This pleasing near Mint Kurush delivers bold strike quality, with reserved luster and a bright eye appeal. From the Richard Margolis Collection." This one year type was struck in several varieties in AH 1106, which seem to vary by weight; this is the light one. Sultan Mustafa II was blamed for losing Hungary to the Hapsburgs and was deposed in August 1703. He is said to have died "of sadness" in December.
