Honduras 1887 50 centavos

Stack's Bowers November 2022 Collectors Choice sale, lot 71635

This specimen was lot 71635 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, November 2022), where it sold for $480. The catalog description^[1] noted, "HONDURAS. 50 Centavos, 1887/6. PCGS AU-55. KM-51. Overdate variety. A well-preserved example with attractive smoky-gray toning and spots of darker patina. From the Pat Johnson Collection." This type was issued 1883-87, 1896-97 and 1908 and usually comes poorly struck. Many overdates and varieties exist. The SCWC lists an 1887/5 overdate but not the 1887/6 shown here. The peso was dropped in favor of the lempira in 1931.
