This specimen was lot 585 in Classical Numismatic Group's sale of the Lissner Collection (Chicago, August 2014), where it sold for $72.60. The catalog description[1] noted, "ITALY, Regno d'Italia. Vittorio Emanuele III. 1900-1946. Stainless Steel 20 Centesimi. Rome mint. Dually dated year 18 of the Fascist Era and 1940 R. Reeded edge. Magnetic. In NGC encapsulation graded MS 66. Gem BU." This type was struck for the kingdom of Italy 1936-42 but only struck for circulation in 1936 and 1939-42. The coin was converted from nickel to to stainless steel in 1939, perhaps the first coin to use that metal. Vittorio Emanuele III succeeded his father Umberto upon the latter's assassination in 1900, but by 1940 he was the helpless tool of the Fascists.

Recorded mintage: 35,350,000.

Specification: 4 g, stainless steel, 21.7 mm diameter, designed by Giuseppe Romagnoli; this specimen Ø22 mm, 6.03 g, 6h axis.

Catalog reference: KM 75a; Mont 314.
