Sincona sale 90, lot 1387

This specimen was lot 1387 in Sincona sale 90 (Zürich, May 2024), where it sold for 375 CHF (about US$496 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"ITALIEN Parma, Ferdinando di Borbone, 1765-1802. 1 Doppia 1791 S, Parma. Schön-sehr schön. Gereinigt. (Italy, duchy of Parma, Ferdinand of Bourbon, 1765-1802, doppia of 1791, Parma mint. Fine-very fine, Cleaned.)"

Duke Ferdinando was descended from Philip V of Spain and thru him Louis XIV of France. This type is listed in the SCWC for 1786-96. All the dates are rare. Doppia means "double," and this coin is roughly two ducats but is likely intended to be two scudi d'oro. Half, four, six and eight doppia also exist but are rare.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 7.14 g, 0.891 fine gold, this specimen 6.75 g.

Catalog reference: KM C18a, MIR 1064/7. Fr-930.
