This silver four pence or "groat" was struck during the reign of George V, king of Britain 1910-36. The type was struck 1928-36 for the Maundy sets. Altho some silver groats were struck for circulation in the 1850's, by the twentieth century the denomination was obsolete, superseded by the familiar sixpence. It was only a relic of the coin which once dominated medieval commerce. As most Maundy sets were carefully preserved by their recipients, Maundy coins are today much more available than the low mintage would indicate. Maundy pennies struck 1921-46 were only 0.500 fine silver.
Recorded mintage: 1,937 struck for Maundy sets.
Specification: 1.88 g, 0.500 fine silver, .030 troy oz ASW.
