Sincona sale 91, lot 3475

This specimen was lot 3475 in Sincona sale 91 (Zürich, May 2024), where it sold for 3,800 CHF (about US$5,021 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"SCHWEIZ Solothurn, Dicken 1642, Solothurn. Eingebuchtetes Standeswappen, oben und seitlich verziert. v MON[ETA v N]OVA v SOLODOREN. Rv. Doppeladler mit Nimben. Unten im Abschitt die Jahreszahl. ٭ ٭ S . VRSVS ٭ ٭ [MARTYR] ٭. Von grosser Seltenheit. Fast sehr schön. Flaue Stellen. Exemplar der Slg. Kunzmann, Auktion SINCONA 53, Zürich, Oktober 2018, Los 6705. (Switzerland, canton of Solothurn, dicken of 1642, Solothurn mint. Obverse: indented and embellished city arms; reverse: haloed doubled headed eagle, date in exergue. Of high rarity, About very fine, Some weakly struck areas.)"

The SCWC lists two varieties for this dicken of 1642: KM 26 (arms on cross) or KM 27 (ornamented arms, shown here), both very rare. Numista states this coin was one-third thaler; we think it was one-third gulden or one quarter thaler.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 7.82 g, silver, 31 mm diameter, this specimen 7.82 g.
