Olmutz 1716 thaler Dav-1216

Jean Elsen sale 150, lot 1482

This specimen was lot 1482 in Jean Elsen sale 150 (Brussels, March 2022), where it sold for €480 (about US$636 including buyer's fees). The catalog description^[1] noted,

"SAINT EMPIRE, OLMÜTZ, Evêché, Wolfgang von Schrattenbach (1711-1738), AR Taler, 1716. D/ B. de l'évêque à d. R/ Grand écu ovale sous une mitre, une croix, une couronne et un chapeau de cardinal. Très Beau. (Holy Roman Empire, bishopric of Olmütz, Wolfgang von Schrattenbach, 1711-38, silver thaler of 1716. Obverse: bust of the bishop right' reverse: large oval arms under a miter, a cross, a crown and a cardinal's hat. Very Fine.)"

This one year type has the date above the cardinal's hat on the reverse; the later Dav-1718 has the arms dividing the date. Olmütz, then in Moravia, is now Olomuoc in the Czech Republic.
