Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale, lot 75275

This specimen was lot 75275 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, February 2022), where it sold for $312. The catalog description[1] noted, "RUSSIA. Kopek, 1789-EM. Ekaterinburg Mint. Catherine II (the Great). NGC AU-58. RARELY encountered better than this minor, the present Kopek offers a strong strike that is well placed on the mostly symmetrical flan. Worthy of a great collection of Russian coins." This type was struck at Ekaterinburg (mintmark EM), Moscow (MM), St. Petersburg (CΠM), Feodosia (TM) and unmarked 1763-67 and 1788-96. This is the most common date of a fairly plentiful type.

Recorded mintage: 6,343,000.

Specification: 10.24 g, copper, 26.5 mm diameter.
