Liberia 1973 5 cents rev DSLR.jpg

Liberia was founded in the 1840's by freed slaves from America who promptly set up a caste society in Africa with the local natives as lesser citizens. This two tier society has broken down somewhat but outbursts of political violence continue. This specimen was struck in proof at San Francisco in 1973. It was struck at various mints 1960-61, 1968-78 and 1983-84. Other denominations included one, ten, twenty-five, fifty cents and a dollar.

Recorded mintage: 11,000 proofs.

Specification: 4.10 g, copper nickel, 20 mm diameter, plain edge.

Catalog reference: KM 14.
