Liberia was founded in the 1840's by freed slaves from America who promptly set up a caste society in Africa with the local natives as lesser citizens. This two tier society has broken down somewhat but outbursts of political violence continue. This specimen was struck in proof at San Francisco in 1973. It was struck at various mints 1966-84 and 1987. This design first appeared on a silver issue of 1960-61 (KM 15). Other denominations included one, five, twenty-five, fifty cents and a dollar.

Recorded mintage: 10,542 proofs.

Specification: 1.9 g, copper-nickel, 16.5 mm diameter.
