This specimen was lot 1766 in Sincona sale 47 (Zürich, May 2018), where it sold for 800 CHF (about US$920 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"FRANCE, Metz, Bistum, Taler 1638. Breiter spanischer Schild im verzierten Sechspass auf der Vorderseite. Sehr selten. Sehr schön. Kleine Kratzer auf dem Rand. (bishopric of Metz, thaler of 1638. Obverse: arms in six petalled polylobe. Very rare, Very fine, Small scratches on the edge.)"
The bishop and city of Metz both issued coins but the town was under French occupation from the mid-1500's, which occupation was formally recognized by the Treaty of Westphalia in 1648. This type is listed for 1638 only.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: silver, this specimen 28.50 g.
