This specimen was lot 519 in Künker Auction 424 (Osnabrück, July 2025), where it sold for €44,000 (about US$62,304 including buyers' fees). The catalog description^[1] noted,

Die Beschneidung Jesu in einer Säulenhalle: Ein Priester hält den Jesusknaben, vor ihm vollzieht ein auf einem reichverzierten Stuhl sitzender Mann mit einem Messer die Beschneidung; dahinter an den Seiten beobachten Maria und Josef die Zeremonie, unten die Signatur EK (Engelbert Ketteler, Münzmeister in Münster 1636-1661). Behind him, on the sides, Mary and Joseph observe the ceremony. Below, the signature EK (Engelbert Ketteler, mint master in Münster 1636-1661). Extremely rare, extremely fine.)

Bischof Ferdinand von Bayern zählte zu den bedeutendsten Regenten in der Zeit des Dreißigjährigen Krieges. Der Sohn des bayerischen Herzogs Wilhelm V. wurde früh für den geistlichen Stand bestimmt und von Jesuiten ausgebildet. Sein Onkel Ernst setzte ihn in seinen vier Bistümern als Koadjutor ein: 1595 in Köln, 1601 in Lüttich und 1611 in Hildesheim und Münster. Im Jahr 1612 trat Ferdinand in diesen Bistümern die Nachfolge an und wurde 1618 außerdem Bischof von Paderborn. Er könnte also auch - wie hundert Jahre später Clemens August von Bayern - als "Le Seigneur de Cinq-Eglises" (Herr Fünfkirchen) tituliert werden. Da alle Städte des Bistums Münster - außer Münster selbst - um das Jahr 1623 ihre Selbständigkeit verloren, gelang es dem Bischof, bis auf Münster alle Gemeinden zum katholischen Glauben zurückzuführen. Der einflußreiche Kirchenfürst war einer der Hauptrepräsentanten der Katholischen Liga und konnte in dieser Position die bayerische Politik seines Bruders Maximilian I. unterstützen. (Bishop Ferdinand of Bavaria was one of the most important rulers during the Thirty Years' War. The son of the Bavarian Duke William V, he was destined for the clergy at an early age and educated by Jesuits. His uncle Ernst appointed him coadjutor in his four dioceses: in 1595 in Cologne, in 1601 in Liège, and in 1611 in Hildesheim and Münster. In 1612, Ferdinand succeeded him in these dioceses and, in 1618, also became Bishop of Paderborn. He could therefore also be called "Le Seigneur de Cinq-Eglises" (Lord of Five Churches), like Clemens Augustus of Bavaria a hundred years later. Since all the cities of the Diocese of Münster—except Münster itself—lost their independence around 1623, the bishop succeeded in converting all parishes, except Münster, to the Catholic faith. The influential prince of the church was one of the main representatives of the Catholic League and in this position was able to support the Bavarian policy of his brother Maximilian I.)"

This was struck using thaler dies. Davenport says of the thaler (Dav-5596), "This is possibly only a medal." The town and the region were thoroughly devastated by the Thirty Years War and never recovered. The bishop succeeded in establishing the Counter-Reformation there and holding the region for the Catholic Church. Ferdinand was also bishop of Hildesheim, Liege and Paderborn and archbishop of Cologne.
