This specimen was lot 870 in Jean Elsen sale 159 (Brussels, June 2024), where it sold for €900 (about US$1,156 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"BRABANT, Duché, François II (1792-1797), AR couronne, 1794, Bruxelles. D/ T. laurée à d. R/ Croix de Bourgogne entre trois couronnes, ornée du bijou de la Toison d'or. Petit coup sur la tranche. Légères traces d'ajustage. Très Beau à Superbe/Superbe. (duchy of Brabant, Francis II, 1792-97, silver crown thaler of 1794, Brussels mint. Obverse: laureate bust right; reverse: Burgundian cross between three crowns, adorned with the jewel of the Golden Fleece. Small rim nick, very fine to extremely fine.)"
This is the last kronenthaler struck by the Hapsburgs in and for Belgium, which was invaded, occupied and annexed by revolutionary France in 1794. Others are known from Vienna (mintmark "A"), Kremnitz (mintmark "B"), Prague (mintmark "C"), Karlsburg (mintmark "E"), Hall (mintmark "F"), Nagybanya (mintmark "G"), Günzburg (mintmark "H") and Milan (mintmark "M") but none actually made in Brussels except for this issue. Four liards = one sol, 54 sols = one kronenthaler.
Recorded mintage: 281,000.
Specification: 29.44 g, 0.873 fine silver; this specimen 29,47 g.
