This specimen was lot 40524 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2023), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted, "AUSTRALIA. 6 Pence, 1961. Melbourne Mint. Elizabeth II. NGC PROOF-66." The regular issue is common but the proofs are not. The type was struck in large quantities 1955-64 and was the last sixpence struck in Australia. An earlier type, struck 1953-54, featured a slightly different obverse legend, "ELIZABETH·II·DEI·GRATIA·REGINA." Sterling coinage ceased after 1964 and in 1966, the Australian dollar was introduced.
Recorded mintage: 9,152,000 plus 1,506 proofs.
Specification: 2.82 g, 0.500 fine silver, .045 troy oz ASW, 19.5 diameter, plain edge, designed by Mary Gillick and George Kruger-Gray.
