This specimen was lot 30250 in Heritage sale 3037 (New York, January 2015), where it sold for $2,820. The catalog description^[1] noted, "Parma. Fernando di Borbone gold Doppia 1792-S MS61 NGC. An alluring specimen with bright, honey-gold surfaces that hold areas of lustrous russet tone. The detail is superb, and despite some minor handling and a few hairlines, this piece delivers a fully-bold strike that is noticeable from all angles, particular[l]y on the bust of Fernando. An elusive type, especially in mint-state, with tremendous eye-appeal. Rare as such. From The Alexander Collection." Duke Ferdinando was descended from Philip V of Spain and thru him Louis XIV of France. This type is listed in the SCWC for 1786-96. All the dates are rare. Doppia means "double," and this coin is roughly two ducats. Half, four, six and eight doppia also exist but are rare.
