Sincona sale 11, lot 944
Ostfriesland in 1648

This specimen was lot 944 in Sincona sale 11 (Zürich, May 2013), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted,

"DEUTSCHLAND Ostfriesland, Grafschaft Edzard II. und Johann von Rietberg, 1566-1591. Taler 1568. Beschnitten. Fast sehr schön-sehr schön. (County of Ostfriesland, Edward II and John of Rietberg, 1566-91, thaler of 1568. Clipped, very fine.)"

This is the first thaler from this scarce locality this author has been able to locate. It was issued 1568-75. The weight (24.49 g) reflects the loss from clipping.

Recorded mintage: 18,976.

Specification: silver, this specimen 24.49 g.

Catalog reference: KM MB 85, Dav-9613; Kappelhoff 231.
