Sincona sale 75, lot 279

This specimen was lot 279 in Sincona sale 75 (Zürich, May 2022), where it sold for 1,500 CHF (about US$1,821 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted, "Grossbritannien | Königreich. George III. 1760-1820. Guinea 1796, London. Spade Guinea. Fifth laureate head. High 6 in date. NGC MS61. Überdurchschnittliche Erhaltung. (Extraordinary condition.)" This type, the commonest of several used during George's long reign, is noted for 1787-99. The reform of 1817 terminated all guinea-denominated issues in favor of the sovereign. At that time the guinea, which heretofore had varied in value, was fixed at 21 shillings.

Recorded mintage: unknown but a slightly better date.

Specification: 8.35 g, 0.917 fine gold, this specimen 8.38 g.

Catalog reference: KM 609, Spink 3729. Bull 729. Fr-356a.
