Sincona sale 81, lot 6198

This specimen was lot 6198 in Sincona sale 81 (Zürich, October 2022), where it sold for 350 CHF (about US$420 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted, "SWITZERLAND | Wallis/Valais | Sitten, Bistum, Adrian V. von Riedmatten, 1672-1701. Vierer 1685. Extremely fine. Minor edge clip." This one year type was issued by the bishop of Sitten (Sion in French). Two vierer made a kreuzer and four kreuzer made a batzen. The Riedmatten family contributed six bishops of Sion and controlled the diocese 1529-45, 1565-1613, 1640-1701. The prince-bishopric was secularized and added to the canton of Valais in 1807.
