Haider Ali's dominions in 1780

This specimen was lot 41102 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2019), where it sold for $4,320. The catalog description^[1] noted, "INDIA. Mysore. 2 Rupee, AM 1215, Year 5 (1801). Patan Mint. PCGS EF-45. Date in retrograde. Sharply detailed and well centered with dark gray toning. SCARCE and highly sought as a larger denomination. From the Collection of Dr. James Eustace Bizzell, II." The Indian state of Mysore, under her rulers Haider Ali (1761-82) and Tipu Sultan (1782-99), was a serious thorn in the side of the British Raj. This type was struck AM 1198-1216 and was accompanied by a half rupee (KM 125) and single rupee (KM 126).
