This specimen was lot 72628 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, June 2021), where it sold for $1,560. The catalog description[1] noted, "NORWAY. 50 Ore, 1888. Kongsberg Mint. Oscar II. PCGS Genuine--Cleaned, Unc Details Gold Shield. A KEY DATE in the series, this specimen does exhibit some very light cleaning as noted, but has begun to develop a rather attractive burnished tone and is free from any real handling." In 1907, Norway obtained a divorce from Sweden and became an independent kingdom under a Danish prince. Even before passing under Swedish rule in 1814, Norway had enjoyed a separate coinage from Denmark. The specimen shown here is from of a type struck 1877-1904 and was accompanied by one and two kroner of similar design. Many dates are very scarce. This one is a rare date.
