This specimen was lot 991 in Sedwick Treasure Auction 27 (Winter Park, FL, May 2020), where it sold for $386.75. The catalog description[1] noted, "Quito, Ecuador, 1/2 real, 1849GJ, NGC AU 53. Choice bold strike with olive fields and contrasting toning in legends, no luster. NGC #4770526-011." This type was struck 1848-49 and normally encountered in Fine or lower. It is lightweight and debased, similar to the infamous Bolivian half real of 1830. No more half reales were struck after 1849. It is scarce, but not rare.
