The first specimen was lot 12218 in Ponterio sale 177 (Chicago, August 2013), where it sold for $764. The catalog description[3] noted, "FRANCE. 40 Franc, 1808-H. La Rochelle Mint. NGC EF-45. Mintage of only 11,577 pieces." The French empire produced large quantities of gold coins, made from metal looted from countries Napoleon conquered. However, nearly all of it was produced at Paris, leaving the branch mint issues quite scarce today. This issue from La Rochelle is the second most common of the six known dates for the type.

Recorded mintage: 11,529[2].

Specification: 12.90 g, 0.900 fine gold, 26 mm diameter, edge lettered DIEU PROTEGE LA FRANCE, designed by Pierre-Joseph Tiolier and Jean-Pierre Droz.

Catalog reference: Fr-495; KM-688.2, F.540/3.
