Sincona sale 76, lot 1049

This specimen was lot 1049 in Sincona sale 76 (Zurich, May 2022), where it sold for 8,000 CHF (about US$9,711 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"DENMARK. Christian VII. 1766-1808. Rigsdaler 1788, Altona. Geprägt nach dem Kurantfuss. Sogenannter Rejsedaler, geprägt auf seine Reise nach Norwegen. Mit den Signaturen MF und DIA (Michael Flor, Münzmeister in Altona 1787-1816, und Daniel Jensen Adzer, Stempelschneider in Altona). Selten, besonders in dieser Erhaltung. Fast FDC. NGC MS62+. (kingdom of Denmark, Christian VII, 1766-1808, rigsdaler of 1788, Altona mint, the so-called "touring dollar" for the king's tour of Norway, with the mintmaster's initials "MF". Rare, especially in this condition, About uncirculated.)"

This rare reisedaler or six mark was struck for the king's tour of Norway and the SCWC files it therein while Davenport lists it under Denmark. To add to the fun, it was struck at Altona in Schleswig-Holstein.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 26.98 g, 0.833 fine silver, this specimen 23.60 g.

Catalog reference: KM 260 (listed under Norway, Hede 25, Sieg 19, Thesen 1 (struck at Kopenhagen). Dav-1312.
