CNG Lissner sale, lot 429

This specimen was lot 429 in Classical Numismatic Group's sale of the Lissner Collection (Chicago, August 2014), where it sold for $453.75. The catalog description[2] noted, "FRANCE, Second Empire. Napoléon III. 1852-1870. AV 10 Francs à la tête laurée. Strasbourg mint; différents: cross crosslet and anchor. Désiré-Albert Barre, engraver general. Henri Delbecque, director. Dated 1868 BB. In NGC encapsulation graded MS 62. Very nice choice uncirculated. Purchased from Lester Merkin, July 1974." This specimen is a slightly better date of a series struck 1862-68 during the régime of Napoleon III. All 31 million were struck at the Paris (mintmark "A") and Strasbourg (mintmark "BB") mints. Most dates are readily available altho gems are scarce. This type is commonly called the "Laureate head."

Recorded mintage: 1,430,556[1].
