This specimen was lot 4236 in Goldberg sale 84 (Los Angeles, January 2015), where it sold for $94. The catalog description[1] noted, "Great Britain. Maundy Penny, 1781. George III. Uncirculated. A difficult date. Attractive old toning. Uncirculated." This type was struck 1763-86 and, tho not rare, is difficult to find in nice condition. It is difficult to appreciate that prior to 1797, all English pennies were struck in silver, a holdover from medieval issues.
Specification: 0.50 g, 0.925 fine silver, .014 troy oz ASW.
