Great Britain 1870 penny

from the Stack's Bowers 2018 NYINC sale, lot 22963

This specimen was lot 22963 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2018), where it sold for $552. The catalog description^[1] noted, "GREAT BRITAIN. Penny, 1870. PCGS MS-64 RB Secure Holder. Sharply struck with even tone and a fair amount of mint red. From the Brighton Collection." This penny was struck 1860-73 in several varieties and is common, tho the proofs are rare. Worn specimens fill dealer junk boxes. Numerous varieties exist.

Recorded mintage: 5,695,000, a better date.

Specification: 9.4 g, bronze, 30.8 mm diameter.
