This specimen was lot 46480 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Chicago, August 2024), where it sold for $85. The catalog description[1] noted, "GREAT BRITAIN. Trade Tokens. Middlesex. Stanhope Copper 1/2 Penny Token, ND (ca. 1790). PCGS MS-64 Brown. Obverse: Bust left of Stanhope holding a book; Reverse: Altar with flame and Liberty Cap in star above." We aren't sure who is honored or satirized here. Candidates include Walter Spencer-Stanhope (1749-1821), industrialist; Philip Stanhope, 2nd Earl Stanhope (1714-1786); Philip Stanhope, 5th Earl of Chesterfield (1755-1815), diplomat and courtier; Charles Stanhope, 3rd Earl Stanhope (1753-1816), politician and inventor; Charles Stanhope, 3rd Earl of Harrington (1753-1829), soldier and politician.
