Sincona sale 57, lot 3055

This specimen was lot 3055 in Sincona sale 57 (Zurich, May 2019), where it sold for 5,250 CHF (about US$6,248 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"LETTLAND | Riga, Stadt, Karl XI. von Schweden, 1660-1697. Taler 1660. Münzmeister Jochim Meinecke. Variante mit zwei Wimpeln auf der Turmspitze. Selten. Fast vorzüglich. Hübsche Patina. (Lithuania, city of Riga, Charles XII of Sweden, 1660-97, thaler of 1660. Rare, About extremely fine, Attractive patina.)"

The Swedish rulers of Livonia (now Latvia) issued a variety of thalers for Riga in the seventeenth century, all rare. This one varies from the otherwise identical Dav-4596 by having twin pennants flapping from the towers.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: silver, this specimen 28.56 g.

Catalog reference: KM 56.1, Neumann 53. Hajak 1560 (R), Dav-A4596.
