Bavaria 1881-D 10 mark

Heritage sale 3026, lot 24674

This specimen was lot 24674 in Heritage sale 3026 (Long Beach, October 2013), where it did not sell. The catalog description^[1] noted, "Bavaria. Ludwig II gold 10 Mark 1881-D, MS66 NGC, a superb coin with satiny surfaces and full mint brilliance, a pristine example in all respects and rare in this select grade." This type is noted for 1874-81, after which none were issued until 1888 (KM 910). The ten mark is quite a bit more affordable than the twenty mark. King Ludwig II ruled until 1886, when he was deposed in favor of his brother. Disliked for his extravagance and his homosexuality, he died soon after under very mysterious circumstances.
