Sincona sale 73, lot 1161

This specimen was lot 1161 in Sincona sale 73 (Zurich, November 2021), where it sold for 800 CHF (about US$1,029 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"DEUTSCHLAND | Sachsen, Herzogtum, ab 1547 Kurfürstentum, ab 1806 Königreich | Gemeinsam. Georg als Herzog, 1500-1539. Taler 1530, Annaberg. Sehr schön. Graffito im Avers. (Germany, duchy of Saxony, George as duke, 1500-39, Annaberg mint. Very fine, Graffito on obverse.)"

The Saxon lands were partitioned between the Ernestine and Albertine lines in 1485, with the Ernestines retaining the electoral cap. The emperor confiscated the cap from Johann Friedrich in 1547 and awarded it to his Albertine cousin Moritz. This type was struck 1530-33 at Freiberg, Schneeberg and Annaberg and is fairly scarce. The clover mintmark denotes this as an Annaberg product. George was duke of Saxony but never elector.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: silver, this specimen 28.92 g.

Catalog reference: KM MB32 (Annaberg), Keilitz 107, Dav-9785.
