Sweden 1842-AG riksdaler specie Dav-352A

Sincona sale 9, lot 5138

This specimen was lot 5138 in Sincona sale 9 (Zurich, October 2012), where it sold for 425 CHF (about US$538 including buyer's fees). The catalog description^[1] noted,

"SCHWEDEN Karl XIV. Johan, 1818-1844. Taler 1842. Sehr schön-vorzüglich. (Sweden, Charles XIV John, 1818-44, thaler of 1842, very fine to extremely fine.)"

This type was struck 1842 only and has a modified reverse from the previous type (see Dav-352). This one is somewhat common. Carl XIV Johan was originally Charles Bernadotte, one of Napoleon's generals. He married into the Swedish royal family and became king himself in 1818. The present dynasty is descended from him.

Recorded mintage: 288,000 (including Dav-352).

Specification: 34 g, 0.750 fine silver, this specimen 33,91 g.
