Stack's Bowers 2023 ANA sale, lot 55210
SB823-55210r.jpg

This specimen was lot 55210 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Pittsburgh, PA, August 2023), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted, "EQUATORIAL GUINEA. 2000 Ekuele, ND (1979). PCGS PROOF-66 Deep Cameo. Commemorating the 1978 FIFA World Cup in Argentina." As a former Spanish colony, this coin was struck in Madrid. It shows traces of a hasty design in the clumsy layout and lettering. Coinage from this country is hard to find and comprises mostly NCLT's.

Wikipedia comments,

"Francisco Macías Nguema (born Mez-m Ngueme, later Africanised to Masie Nguema Biyogo Ñegue Ndong; 1 January 1924 – 29 September 1979), often mononymously referred to as Macías, was an Equatoguinean politician who served as the first President of Equatorial Guinea from the country's independence in 1968 until his overthrow in 1979. He is widely remembered as one of the most brutal dictators in history."

Altho Macias was tried and shot after his ouster, his nephew still rules the country today as private property.

Recorded mintage: 195 proofs.

Specification: 42.87 g, 0.925 fine silver.

Catalog reference: KM-38.
