This specimen was lot 44340 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Costa Mesa, CA, August 2021), where it sold for $75. The catalog description[1] noted, "EQUATORIAL GUINEA. 2000 Ekuele, 1980-CHI. NGC PROOF-67 Ultra Cameo. Featuring Burchell's Zebra. A brilliant Proof with hard mirrored fields and frosted devices. From the Midtown Collection." This NCLT was issued as part of a series honoring endangered wildlife (see KM 56, 57, 58). It seems odd that the species selected, the zebra, cheetah and tiger, are well known to zoogoers but none live in Equatorial Guinea. Circulating coinage from the country is hard to find.

Wikipedia comments, "Burchell's zebra (Equus quagga burchellii) is a southern subspecies of the plains zebra. It is named after the British explorer and naturalist William John Burchell. Common names include the bontequagga, Damaraland zebra, and Zululand zebra (Gray, 1824). Burchell's zebra is the only subspecies of zebra which may be legally farmed for human consumption."

Recorded mintage: est. 1,000.

Specification: 31 g, 0.927 fine silver.

Catalog reference: KM-55.
