Sincona sale 46, lot 401

This specimen was lot 401 in Sincona sale 46 (Zurich, May 2018), where it sold for 700 CHF (about US$840 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"Frankreich, Louis XVIII. 1814-1824. 20 Francs 1821 A, Paris. Seltener Jahrgang. Vorzüglich. (kingdom of France, Louis XVIII, 1814-24, twenty francs of 1821, Paris mint. Rare date, Extremely fine.)"

This issue, from the Paris mint, is one of a type struck during the reign of Louis XVIII from seven mints. Paris mint issues are reasonably common but the branch mint issues are generally rare. A complete set of this type (1816-24) comprises 34 date and mintmark combinations. Le Franc estimates a total mintage of 12.7 million for the whole type. All gold twenty francs were officially recalled in 1928 but effectively ceased to circulate during World War I.

Reported Mintage: 11,653, a scarce date.

Specification: 21 mm diameter, 6.45 grams, 0.900 fine gold, edge lettered DOMINE SALVUM FAC REGEM, Designed by August François Michaud, 1786-1879); this specimen 6.42 g.

Catalog reference: Gadoury 1028, Schl. 140. Fr-538, F.519/24, KM 712.1.
