This specimen was lot 71434 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Santa Ana, CA, October 2019), where it sold for $1,020. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Saxe-New-Gotha. Taler, 1670. Ernst I (III) the Pious. NGC AU-58. Struck to commemorate the Baptism of Princess Anna Sophia, oldest daughter of Prince Friedrich. Evidence of being overstruck on an earlier type with remnants of the original legend visible throughout the obverse legend. At first glance the remnants of the hosts legend my be disregarded as the obverse is slightly double struck, but there remains enough detail for possible attribution by the specialist. A highly interesting and lovely survivor with lots of character destine[d] for a fine cabinet." The duchy of Saxe-Gotha was created and lapsed more than once. This version was erected in 1640 and lasted until 1680, when it was partitioned among the seven surviving sons. The thalers are generally scarce to rare.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: silver.
