This specimen was lot 4127 in Sincona sale 43 (Zurich, October 2017), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted,
"SWITZERLAND, Stadt und Kanton Basel, Dicken 1499. Baselstab zwischen zwei Basilisken. Rv. Madonna mit Christuskind in Strahlen. Sehr selten. Gutes sehr schön. Kleinere Randverletzung. (canton of Basel, dicken of 1499, city arms between two basilisks; reverse: Madonna and Child standing in a Glory. Very rare. Good very fine, Minor edge damage.)"
Altho the Swiss cantons had won de facto independence from the Empire by the late fifteenth century, the fact was not officially recognized until 1648, when the confederation left the empire by the treaties of Westphalia which ended the Thirty Years War. The dicken seems to be worth two groschen or one-third of a gulden.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: silver, this specimen 7.10 g.
Catalog reference: Ewig 320, HMZ 2-51a.
