Chile 1846-So IJ 8 escudos

Sincona sale 38, lot 1081

This specimen was lot 1082 in Sincona sale 38 (Zurich, May 2017), where it sold for 1,100 CHF (about US$1,319 including buyer's fees). The catalog description^[1] noted,

"Republik 8 Escudos 1846. IJ-Santiago Sehr schön. Kleiner Schrötlingsfehler. Kleine Kratzer. (republic of Chile, eight escudos of 1846, Santiago mint. Very fine, Minor planchet defect, minor scratches.)"

This is the first date of a series struck 1846-51. There is an earlier standing liberty type, struck 1839-45, where liberty is resting her hand on a pedestal instead of the book of the law shown here. Neither type is rare but prices of these coins have surged in recent years.
