Jean Elsen sale 154, lot 1652

This specimen was lot 1652 in Jean Elsen sale 154 (Brussels, March 2023), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted,

"SAINT EMPIRE, SALZBOURG, Archevêché, Ernest de Bavière (1540-1554), AR Guldiner, 1546. D/ Ecu écartelé de Palatinat-Bavière, sous la date. R/ Saint Rupert assis de f., ten. un saloir et une crosse. Très rare. Patine foncée. Très Beau. (archbishopric of Salzburg, Ernest of Bavaria, 1540-54, silver guldiner of 1546. Obverse: quartered arms of Bavaria and the Palatinate below the date; reverse: St. Rudbert facing, holding a saltcellar and a cross. Very rare, nice patina, Very Fine.)"

Davenport lists this type for 1540, 1546 and 1549-54. It is expensive compared to the common thalers of the seventeenth century but is more available than other issues of archbishop Ernst of Bavaria.
