This specimen was lot 71049 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Santa Ana, CA, May 2018), where it sold for $960. The catalog description[1] noted, "INDIA. Mysore. 1/2 Rupee, AM 1218/44, Year 8 (1789). Patan Mint. Tipu Sultan (1782-1799). NGC AU-58. Struck in the Mauludi Era (AM, not AH as listed on slab) year 1218. The date is written in retrograde at 7 o'clock on the reverse. Single finest certified at NGC. Sharply struck with all legends fully visible. Dark gray toning with strong underlying luster and quite attractive." The Indian state of Mysore, under her rulers Haider Ali (1761-82) and Tipu Sultan (1782-99), was a serious thorn in the side of the British Raj. This type was struck AM 1200, 1216-1223 and was accompanied by a rupee (KM 126) and double rupee (KM 127). Rupees were also struck at the Dharwar, Farrukhi, Nagar, Khurshed-Sawad, Kalikut mints.
