from the Stack's Bowers 2017 NYINC sale, lot 6834
Naples SB117-6834r.jpg

This specimen was lot 6834 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2017), where it sold for $352.50. The catalog description[1] noted, "ITALY. Naples. Carlino, 1716. Charles VI of Austria (1711-34). PCGS AU-58 Secure Holder. Nicely struck with attractive multicolored tone. Ex: Stack's December 9-10, 1992, Lot # 4207." The SCWC notes that 12 carlini = 6 tari = 1 piastra, where a piastra is roughly equal to a peso. Charles II, the last Hapsburg king of Spain, was also king of Naples and Sicily. After his death the area passed out of the hands of the Spanish crown, only to be reconquered by them in the 1730's. Philip V of Spain was able to strike a few coins in his name early in his reign but he was forced to surrender all his Italian claims by the Treaty of Utrecht in 1715. The Austrians held Naples 1714-34 and Sicily 1720-34.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 2.29 g, .833 fine silver, .061 troy oz ASW.

Catalog reference: MIR-327. KM 136.
