Heritage sale 3029, lot 30279

This specimen was lot 30279 in Heritage sale 3029 (New York, January 2014), where it sold for $7,637.50. The catalog description^[1] noted, "Gustav IV Adolf gold Ducat 1798-OL, MS62 NGC. Second bust of the King with a long flowing peruke. Fully lustrous and attractive with bold details and no adjustment marks. A rare and underrated type and date, noted as R in Ahlstrom, Sveriges Mynt. Gustav IV Adolf was the son of Gustav III and was forced to abdicate the throne in 1809 as his intemperate foreign policies resulted in the loss of eastern Sweden and Finland. Ex: "Colonel" E.H.R. Green; Green Estate' Partnership of Eric P Newman/B.G. Johnson." In the pre-reform Swedish coinage, 8 öre = 1 mark and 96 öre = one riksdaler. This type was struck 1796-98 and is scarce. Friedberg merges it with the prior issue of 1793-95 (KM 541) but the king's hairstyle is distinctly different.
