Saxony 1591-HB thaler Dav-9816

Sincona sale 51, lot 3279

This specimen was lot 3279 in Sincona sale 51 (Zurich, October 2018), where it sold for 1,500 CHF (about US$1,809 including buyer's fees). The catalog description^[1] noted,

"Sachsen, Kurfürstentum, Christian I. 1586-1591. Taler 1591, Dresden. Auf seinen Tod. Selten. Sehr schön-vorzüglich. (Germany, electorate of Saxony, Christian I, 1586-1591, thaler of 1591, Dresden mint, on his death. Rare, Very fine-extremely fine.)"

Saxony was a wealthy state at the end of the sixteenth century and was blessed with numerous silver mines. Many thalers were produced. This one marks the death of the duke and was accompanied by a double thaler (Dav-9815).
