This specimen was lot 1003 in Jean Elsen sale 121 (Brussels, June 2014), where it sold for €70 (about US$112 including buyers' fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"ALLEMAGNE, SAXE, Friedrich August III (1763-1806), AR Taler, 1776 EDC, Dresde. Nettoyé. Griffes. Très Beau à Superbe. (Germany, electorate of Saxony, Frederick Augustus III (1763-1806), silver thaler of 1776, Dresden mint. Cleaned, scratched, very fine to extremely fine.)"
This type is listed in the SCWC for 1769-79 and is common in grades up to extremely fine. It was struck simultaneously with a mining thaler (Dav-2691). Friedrich August III did not pursue the Polish adventures of his ancestors and prosperity began to return to Saxony.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 28.08 g, .833 fine silver, .751 troy oz ASW, this specimen 27,85 g.
