This specimen was lot 1494 in Sincona sale 18 (Zurich, May 2014), where it sold for CHF 550 (about US$725 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"Taler 1554. Annaberg Fast vorzüglich-vorzüglich. (Germany, electorate of Saxony, thaler of 1554, Annaberg mint, extremely fine.)"
Saxony, one of the larger divisions of Germany and blessed with numerous silver mines, issued large numbers of thalers. Davenport lists this type for 1554-58 under duke August.
Recorded mintage: unknown but fairly common.
Specification: silver.
Catalog reference: Keilitz/Kahnt 48. Schnee 703. Dav-9791.
